PKS` humanitarian funds and helpers for disaster victims

Cibinong, West Java (ANTARA News) - The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS)-Bogor chapter, has deployed 30 humanitarian workers to the disaster zones of Mount Merapi`s eruptions and Mentawai tsunami.

"We have so far deployed thirty humanitarian workers. They are gradually sent to the two natural disaster zones," Head of PKS-Bogor district chapter, KH.Ajid Muslim said here Saturday.

Besides deploying the voluntary rescue workers, he said his people also raised funds among the party`s cadres residing in Bogor district.

"We have so far been able to collect Rp150 million from these internal fund raising activities. Every cadre must donate at least Rp10,000."

"The money will be used to help the victims of Mount Merapi, Mentawai and Wasior disasters," he said adding that the total funds donated by the PKS cadres were expected to reach Rp300 million.

PKS-Bogor district chapter`s secretary, Muarif, said community members in general were also urged to support the public donation for those in need in the three natural disaster zones.

"It is time for all of us to show our concrete acts of solidarity and social sympathy to those in need," he said.

Indonesia had been hit by a series of deadly natural disasters in October.

On October 3 and 4, flash floods crushed Wasior town in West Papua Province, killing at least 150 people, and causing a few hundreds of others to go missing.

The flooding has not only caused lots of families to lose their loved ones but also caused injury to 853 people and forced 4,625 others move to safer places.

Then on October 25, a strong earthquake with the magnitude of 7.2 in the Richter Scale rocked Pagai Selatan subdistrict, Mentawai district, triggering the coming of deadly giant waves.

The tsunami killed a few hundreds of people and caused tens of others to go missing.
On October 26 and on November 5 Mount Merapi, one of the world`s most active volcanoes, erupted, spewing hot clouds and ashes up and down the slopes of hundreds of villages.

Besides killing and injuring several hundreds of people, eruptions had also damaged 867 hectares of forested land on the volcano`s slopes in Sleman District, Yogyakarta, with losses estimated at Rp33 billion.

The damaged forested areas included the Merapi National Park, community forests and local people`s plantations.
